Treetrunk

Treetrunk Records, hailing from MidWestern USA, accepts quality musical submissions from artists from all over the globe. Our original mission was to showcase ambient and particularly experimental ambient (such as fractal / generative) music. For some time we also expanded into the field of phonography or field recordings, for both raw recordings and manipulated recorded material. Finally we have opened the doors a bit to other genres, accepting various quality submissions, though we still prefer for them to be experimental in nature, at least to a degree. We are a NetLabel with a heart. That does not mean that we accept everything sent our way. Rather, we strive to treat the creators of good music (and their fans) with compassion, releasing our material in a coherent and organized fashion, and, of course, generally-- charging no money for our releases. We invite interested parties to visit us at our homepage: ( Treetrunk Home Page ).

"'Escape from Lhasa' was plotted out very carefully in 80 segments of 48 seconds each with the parameters changed on the fly (which required 64 minutes of extreme alertness to execute!), and has five distinct levels in which the steps descend by powers of three, with each of the sixteen tracks changed separately within those levels in order to descend seamlessly from the mountain. It represents the sprituality of the mountaintop, a place beyond words, in which the earthiness of monastery...

Musician Edward J. Powley created a wonderful set of shimmering generative pieces. "For each track, a few thousand iterations of Conway's Game of Life were used to choose notes to play through a bank of plucked string synths. The resulting wav files were then processed in Adobe Audition to make them a bit easier on the ears." Highly recommended!

Treetrunk is proud to present a whimsical and intelligent set of generative pieces by K.M. Krebs. "The Jade Furnace I is the first in an undetermined number of albums that will be released on Treetrunk Records. The name is derived from a Taoist alchemical metaphor that denotes the space in which the great work of alchemical transformation takes place. I have always felt a very strong resonance between the process of creating music and the symbolism and metaphors of alchemy. This album...

Music can seem both real and unreal, and its ability to render certain scenarios and situations depends in part on what means are used. One way to add to a sense of "reality" is to use actual recordings of atmospheres-- field recordings. This album, "Nocturne", is a combination of field recordings, phonographic collages, and sample work, created primarily to evoke places and times important to the composer. Thanks first to Jerry for the drums and Royce Lee for the arpeggio...

Leading-edge ambient artist Seetyca has gifted Treetrunk with this excellent suite of 6 pieces. "The suite was recorded and mixed in October/November at Mbira v.04 studio by Seetyca, and mastering was by by Artin Mucht. This record was made by using samples of mystified and is dedicated to the time wasted by thinking about time running by." -- Seetyca. Note: The samples sent to Seetyca were phonographic in nature, and originated in the Saint Louis soundworld of mystified.

AutoCad went through a period of great exposure, when our dabbling with fractal ambient and techno music landed us featured positions at many websites and even an appearance in "Spin" Magazine. "Fractal Diner 3" is part of a continuing series of Treetrunk Records compilations based on fractal and generative music. The purpose of this and similar compilations is to highlight artists' uses of different programs and means for music creation. Four artists are represented on "Fractal Diner 3". Each wrote music using different composing techniques. Image-based generation and several fractal / generative programs were used, as were other means.

Mystified's acquisition of a recording device has ushered in a new era for the band. Rather than mixing pre-created sounds or sounds created by other artists, mystified has embarked on the delicious task of making his own sounds from scratch-- or, rather, harvesting them from his surroundings, in phonographic style. Using this new device and a cheap microphone (soon to be replaced), mystified has captured through sound collage and direct recording the experience of apartment life in South City...

"Music For Infants" was created by mystified ( www. mystifiedmusic.com ). Filled with quiet bell-like and percussive variations, the piece was written with small children in mind-- but is not exclusive to kids and can be enjoyed by adults, as well. Quiet morphing phrases twinkle like the stars of the sky, affording the brain with music both comforting and challenging. Listeners will be inclined to let their minds wander, staying alert yet creative, visualizing what nice things occur...

Four different artists have used different systems and programs to create outstanding examples of fr/gen music. Pieces on this album range from New Age / easy listening to dissonant and dark environmental. The album, though relatively short, definitely conveys a large range of moods and modes.

In February of 2007, longtime friend / collaborator / painter Sandy Spreitz introduced an idea to me that I really loved. He offered to paint 2 paintings for me, with a total of 4 elemental subjects, and asked for me to write music for the paintings. The first painting was to represent the elements "earth" and "air", the second "water" and "fire". And, while Mr. Spreitz painted his paintings, he promised to listen to music by mystified. Cities remain, in spite of their occasional ugliness, one of the most beautiful kinds of amalgamations of human effort. They are also a great place to find, of course-- people. I have lived in cities for most of my life. This particular longform work, "City Of Drones", is comprised of seven pieces. One piece permeates the entire work; it is a re-working of "Mutescape", an actual field recording of an urban scene run through various filters and effects. The other six pieces...

I am interested in some sonic ideas. One idea is to take something small or ordinary and make it sound much larger than it is. Kind of like the principle George Lucas used when he glued together hundreds of model kits to make his original "Death Star". Another is to pursue textures and surfaces, and I am especially interested in pieces where textures and surfaces continue to shift. "Trash Everest" involves these ideas and more. In the year since releasing Complex Silence 15, I've gone through a personal crucible. Extreme emotional pain. Lest you think I am going to cry and moan, don't fret. It seems my emotional pain, when I bear down on it and really feel it and sit with it, drives me to creativity. Of course, I'm not unique among artists, writers, poets, or musicians. Some might even dare to call my emotions an obsession, but I still have both ears and all my fingers. Professionals assure me that processing...

The Complex Silence Series is proud to welcome and share a contribution by Shane Morris to mark the twentieth release of the Series. Shane is well-known in the ambient universe for sharing his magnificent sound worlds freely as Creative Commons releases and through live concerts. Here, Shane presents four minimal pieces that can only be described as lush and gorgeous. Bell-like sounds and electric piano predominate, but to say that is at once a contradiction. Listen deeply and then listen even...

Holidays can be a time of great joy, but sometimes, let's be honest, other feelings intrude. My friend the psychiatrist says he takes more calls during holiday times than any other time of the year-- calls from sad, angry, desperate people. If the symbol of the winter holiday is a toy, perhaps for some it would be a broken toy. This mix uses glitch, circuit bent and other sounds to explore the darker sides of toys, and of the holidays themselves. Mixed by Mystified, here is a set from the Land...

Experienced artist Tange has created 4 longform pieces of ambient/soundscape music, crafted by his own mysterious generative processes. Do have a listen-- these tracks are full of interest and beauty. Treetrunk is also especially pleased to revisit the theme of generative music-- the original focus of the label.

Ars Sonor asked Mystified if they could do a split e.p. where they mixed each other's tracks in experimental fashion. Mystified agreed, and here is the result-- deep, dark and atmospheric.

Not many things in this world are constant. Maybe you can think of a few. In 2005, mystified discovered a drone that he was so impressed with that he decided that he could listen to it constantly. He created a longform piece from this drone, with only a few embellishments, and asked Webbed Hand Records' ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ) chief C.P. McDill if he would release this new piece, "Constant". Mr. McDill agreed. Not long afterwards, variations of "Constant" by other...

"Are you Cousin Silas?" A person interested in using a song of his, released on my netlabel, for a non-commercial project asked me. "No", I replied "but I am probably his number one fan." It is with this in mind that I write the liner notes for the release of Complex Silence 28, an album that I was honored to do the album design for (using a painting by the fantastic visual artist and mutual friend Ade Hodges) and one I've only just listened to because I wanted to...

This 6-hour piece was created using sferics, or atmospheric discharges from the Earth. It debuted in its entirety on Stillstream radio in 2009, and was played on Chestnut Tree radio once again in 2012. The piece has often been requested and asked about, so here it is.

"I had created a couple of long form pieces specifically for this release and was letting them incubate. At about the same time, Thomas Park had been mixing my Drone Artifacts into a couple of his recent (and highly recommended) Luminous Deep releases." "So it occurred to me, why not send my two pieces for Complex Silence 32 to Thomas and invite him to work his Mystified magic on them? Why not indeed." "And so it was. And here it is. A collaboration of two new long form...

Treetrunk has been hoping to release some music by excellent techno artist Plexus Instruments for some time. Now folks, this isn't just your average techno. It's music that crosses borders and genres, and manages to be both emotive and musical, complex and understandable. Our only regret is that we could only feature three songs by this excellent artist.

"These works were spurred by a drone created by Thomas Park. It was/is a deep drone created with a trombone. In its inception, Pluto and Charon were started in a playful, fun demeanor; almost a challenge with a friendly manner. They quickly turned into  two different sounding projects. One a feeling of wonder and light, the other a feeling of mystery and confrontation with the afterlife. In a series of serendipitous exchanges with Thomas it was decided to release these sounds as a mini...

"Just five years ago, Thomas Park took an interest in my ambient music efforts and invited me to participate in the Constant Series on his Treetrunk Records netlabel. http://treetrunkrecords.wordpress.com/ By way of providing some background and definition, a Constant is a longform, minimal drone that takes a less is more approach. The idea is to create the least possible ambient drone material necessary for listening. As Mystified, Thomas himself created the first Constant on Webbed Hand...

The French drone monks of Digital Mass have composed a new soundtrack for their own meditation rituals. In addition to their custom secret sounds they have used sounds provided by Kecap Tuyul (an old tape of prepared guitar improvisations) and by Thanato Twist With Oleg's Sound System (synths, effects, balalaika). You are welcome to test the effects of these soundscapes on your body, mind and soul...

"When Mystified made his pluto120 drone available for people to use in their own compositions, I decided to create a long-form ambient piece using this drone as the basic element of the track.  I added some winter night sounds I found on freesound.org and clarinet improvisations which I created on the Ensoniq TS-12 synthesizer.  I felt that the clarinet was an instrument that could express the mood I was going for, something very cold and remote, two elements which define what, at one...

A new release from Mister Vapor. Here are two mid- to- longform pieces on the familiar subject of deep space. They are compositions, true, and they are also minimal and melodic, verging on sheer atmospheria. Good for peripheral listening; excellent with headphones.

"Prometheus lay, bound by a chain, on a rock on mount kazbek being awakened by the cold of the winter wind. He instinctively knew why this eternal fate had befallen him but knowing didn't help ease the anxiety of the torment to come, every day, not at the same time, but at various intervals, to maintain the agony and suspense of the punishment." "Like he had done for thousands of years, he began the breathing ritual, in and out, slow deliberate breaths, deep and profound to clear...

Thomas Park of Mystified created several drone samples using the sound of his harmonica. He offered the samples up for remixing, and a small group of artists volunteered their time into doing so. Four remixes are represented here, in different styles. All are excellent. Artists represented include Tomorrow's Man, SoundSavant, Phillip Adkins and Mystified.

AN UNAUTHORIZED TRIBUTE TO RAPOON BY VARIOUS ARTISTS Why pay tribute to Robin Storey's Rapoon? As a listener, Robin's music was immediately interesting to me, because drone music as a genre was something I hadn't yet heard. Soon, I became captivated by this conversation between sounds-- samples interacting, some looped, others making unique or shorter appearances. Technically, then, this was musique concrete-- or largely that. It was also listenable-- very "musical" in a traditional...
